Thebook is a semi autobiographical story about a woman who has achievednothing in her life and wants to get an information before it is toolate. She is being forced to have a baby by her married man Denny andregrets not getting any qualifications. With a lack of learning shehad only hairdressing to turn to. She started to feel like she wasjust another someone in a crowd, nobody special at home so she starts aliterature course at the Open University. Where she is given free-spoken asa tutor. Frank teaches her literature. She is an outcast to begin butit doesnt take long before she becomes a stereotypical studentsitting on the lawn.Frank is a middle-aged man, divorced but not single. His girlfriendJulia who we find cheating on him. As an English Lecturer and formerpoet, he understands the deeper core behind literature, but hecant remember it half the time because of his little drinkingproble m.The character of Rita was based on the writers own life andexperiences. They both grew up outside Liverpool with a poor educationand a lack of qualifications. They both set off to replace their lives.Rita became a student while Willy Russell lived his dream of being awriter.In act 1 Rita is introduced. She is shown to be loud and outwardlyconfident. An example is her use of inappropriate, crude language.When she sees a piece of artwork hanging on Franks office wall shesays look at those tits. This quote expresses her attitude and givesyou the impression she is loud and forever and a day speaks her mind. Herapproach to Franks sophisticated reality is crude and shocking.Thats S for Susan. This shows her lack of education and hercompletely di fferent approach to literature, her experiences are onlyreading pulp fiction books.. This lack in education causes her socialstatus around teach to be very low. She wants to be like the otherstudents and knows it will take a lot of work to get there.
